The space rock is expected to zoom past our planet today at a speed of around 45,991 miles per hour, according to NASA.
The asteroid that caused panic about potentially colliding with Earth is the size of a building, Nasa has found. The Webb Space Telescope has captured more information and detailed pictures of asteroid 2024 YR4, which briefly appeared to be potentially smashing into Earth in 2032.
Late last year, a newly discovered asteroid caused quite a stir when initial observations revealed a greater than 1% chance that it would strike the Earth in 2032. The medium-sized asteroid, dubbed 2024 YR4,
The space rock is expected to zoom past our planet at a zippy 28,655 miles per hour, according to the space agency.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration spotted the asteroid 2024 YR4 for the first time; previously thought to have a 1-in-83 chance of hitting Earth in December 2032.NASA stated that scientists used the James Webb telescope to
THE football-sized asteroid that scientists initially feared could strike Earth is now on course to potentially crash into the Moon. Asteroid 2024 YR4, once dubbed a “city killer”, has an
A “city-killer” asteroid previously thought to be on a collision course with the Earth could smash into the Moon instead, new data suggests.
With the first round of Webb observations complete, the chances of 2024 YR4 impacting the Moon isn't zero. "While an Earth impact by 2024 YR4 on December 22, 2032 has now been ruled out, it continues to have a non-zero probability of impacting the Moon at this time," the report says.
A large asteroid whose chances of hitting Earth have been all but ruled out is now slightly more likely to hit the Moon than previously thought, Nasa says. When first discovered, asteroid 2024 YR4 had a very small chance of impacting Earth in 2032 but the US space agency has cut that chance to 0.
