Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday ordered the Israeli military to carry out “immediate, powerful” strikes in Gaza after Israel accused Hamas of violating the US-brokered ceasefire deal and staging the discovery of a deceased hostage.

Israel has strengthened its security with a series of sweeping military victories in the past two years. It has also become far more isolated internationally, with no clear path ahead.

Hamas officials have confirmed they handed over the body of another Israeli hostage on Monday as President Donald Trump's deadline nears.

Since an Israel-Hamas cease-fire deal came into effect, the U.S. effort to sustain it appears to have constrained Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
