Erin, currently a Category 2 storm in the Atlantic, is not expected to make landfall in the region but will churn up hazardous conditions along the New Jersey, New York City and Long Island shorelines.
Beaches along the New Jersey coast and in Delaware were closed Tuesday as the powerful storm churned in the Atlantic. New York City announced its beaches would close on Wednesday and Thursday.
The swimmer was not identified by police, but a Coast Guard official said the victim was a young teenage girl.
