Mayor Brandon Johnson is asking businesses to offer up new violent crime response tools just as his administration ends the ShotSpotter police technology deal, and the controversial outgoing vendor intends to throw its hat in the ring to continue operating in Chicago.

CHICAGO (CBS) — ShotSpotter is now offline in Chicago. The gunshot detection system stopped sending data to police at 12:01 a.m. Monday—all despite a monthslong fight to keep the technology in the city.

The City of Chicago's relationship with ShotSpotter came to an end as the clock turned from Sunday night to Monday morning. But the Chicago Police Department is assuring people that its commitment to public safety hasn't changed.
