The U.S. has accused the rebel forces in the Sudan of genocide and has levied economic sanctions against its leader.

Rebel forces in Sudan are committing genocide amid a war of “unmitigated brutality” and the world’s largest humanitarian catastrophe, the U.S. government said on January 7.

The Biden administration says the Rapid Support Forces rebel group in Sudan is committing genocide and announced new sanctions for the group’s leader and affiliated companies. It’s the latest escalation for Sudan which is facing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world right now.

Members of the Rapid Support Forces and allied militias have committed genocide in Sudan, the U.S. government has determined. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced his determination in a statement Tuesday,

"The RSF and allied militias have systematically killed males, including infants, based on ethnicity and targeted women and girls for rape and brutal sexual violence," Blinken said.

The Treasury Department backed the determination of genocide with a raft of sanctions targeting the RSF’s leader, Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.
