Kilmar Abrego Garcia, living in the US under protected status since 2019, faces renewed deportation efforts despite previous legal protections. A federal judge halted his removal to Uganda while hearings continue.

Abrego Garcia has an American wife and children and has lived in Maryland for years. Although he was deemed eligible for pretrial release last month, he remained in jail at the request of his attorneys, who feared the Republican administration could try to immediately deport him again if he were freed.

Abrego, wrongfully deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador, now faces removal to Uganda just a day after being freed from a Tennessee jail.
