Thick fog has enabled Russian troops to move further into the key strategic city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine's 7th Airborne Assault Corps says weather conditions, particularly dense fog, have prompted Moscow to intensify its bid to get increasing numbers into the ruined city and encircle Ukrainian forces.
The battle for Pokrovsk is crucial for control of Ukraine's Donetsk region. Russian and Ukrainian forces are deeply entrenched, sometimes fighting for the same buildings.
The video, likened to a scene from "Mad Max," was geolocated by NBC News to Pokrovsk, where fierce battles have been taking place as Russia pushes to capture the city.
The country will introduce fixed-term military contracts to try to attract recruits and ease the strain on soldiers after years of fighting.
Last week Ukrainian units faced intense pressure at multiple flashpoints. Kyiv reported that between Monday night and Tuesday night, its forces engaged in some 170 tactical engagements— 40 percent of which, according to some estimates, were in or around Pokrovsk.
