By reviewing the Teslas in public before cameras, Trump ensured that his purchase would get wide attention. Dan Scavino, a White House deputy chief of staff, livestreamed the event on X, the social media app owned by Musk. Trump said he would pay for the vehicle by check.

America PAC has now moved on to influencing the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, with Musk’s group dropping over $8 million to support a conservative judge in an election next month, according to the Associated Press. Donald Trump Jr. and Charlie Kirk are even swooping in to hold a town hall for the conservative judge on Monday.

The Biden White House explained the snub by noting that the automakers that had been invited were the nation’s three largest employers of the United Auto Workers, a powerful union, and it suggested that the administration would find other ways to partner Tesla. (Union animus towards electric vehicles later became a problem for Mr Biden.)
