Over the past few weeks, the federal government has previewed items that will be included in the federal budget, being introduced today.
President Donald Trump returned to the White House with a promise to slash spending by trillions of dollars and balance the federal budget. But, as the first fiscal year of his second term came to a close, progress had not been made on either of those goals.
John Ricco, an analyst with the Budget Lab at Yale University, reckons that Trump’s tariffs will bring in $200 billion to $300 billion a year in revenue. But a $2,000 dividend — if it went to all Americans, including children — would cost $600 billion. “It’s clear that the revenue coming in would not be adequate,” he said.
Since the modern federal budget process began in 1976, the US has experienced 20 separate funding gaps. Most lasted only a few days.
