The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday confirmed the country's first case of H5N1 bird flu infection in a child, who experienced mild symptoms and is recovering from their illness.

Investigation into the child's exposure to H5N1 is still under way, the CDC said. In other H5N1 developments, the Hawaii State Department of Health yesterday said tests in people who had contact with an infected flocks are all negative, even in those who had high-risk exposure.

In 2009, H1N1 bird flu caused the first global flu pandemic in 40 years, with the first infections detected in California. More than 12,000 people died around the US, and nearly 61,000 people were infected. The “pig flu” was constantly in headlines as communities tried to track the number of sick and dead from the contagious virus.
