George Lucas has explained why Yoda speaks backwards in 'Star Wars.' The creator of the franchise made the revelation during a 45th anniversary screening of 'The Empire Strikes Back' at the opening night of the 2025 TCM Classic Film Festival.

Yoda first appeared in 1980's The Empire Strikes Back. Legendary puppeteer Frank Oz voiced and operated Yoda. Oz reprised the role for Return of the Jedi in 1983 and voiced Yoda in subsequent movies, including 2017’s The Last Jedi.
