There’s a $1 million prize and big names for 2025 US Open mixed doubles. Why are some people upset?
Grand Slam singles champions such as Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys will be playing for extra money — $1 million to the winning duo — and trying to get their hands on a trophy in the U.
The U.S. Open's experiment to bring a bigger spotlight to the mixed doubles kicks off on Tuesday, as the competition gets its own place on the calendar and organisers lure in fans with partnerships made up of top singles players.
Many of the world’s top tennis players, who ordinarily focus on the singles matches, will compete at the event, to the disappointment of some career mixed-doubles players.
The winning duo will take home a $1 million prize, which is higher than most prize purses for mixed doubles major tournaments. The 16 teams will play over two days. The first round and quarterfinals take place on Tuesday inside the main show courts at the USTA National Tennis Center. The semifinals and championship match will be on Wednesday night.
Thus, Sinner will almost certainly miss the US Open mixed doubles and enjoy a week off the court ahead of the ultimate challenges. "Now I will take a couple of days to recover, then I will get back to work, hoping to be ready. The US Open is my main goal in the United States," Jannik Sinner said.
The first week of the 2025 US Open gets started on Monday, Aug. 18 and the week will also feature the new look Mixed Doubles format.
