Alphabet's Waymo will add electric vehicles from South Korea's Hyundai Motor to its robotaxi fleet, the companies said on Friday, as Waymo expands in the United States.

Waymo has its sights set on its next robotaxi: the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The Alphabet company announced that it was entering a “multi-year, strategic” partnership with the Hyundai Motor Group that will result in the Ioniq 5 eventually joining its robotaxi fleet.

Waymo and Hyundai have announced a strategic partnership, which will see the autonomous ride-hailing company adopt the Ioniq 5. The US-built EV will be equipped with Waymo’s sixth-generation autonomous driving system and road tests are slated to begin late next year.

IONIQ 5, hitting the US this fall, will join Waymo’s robotaxi fleet. As part of a new multi-year partnership, Hyundai is preparing to allocate a “significant” amount of IONIQ 5 models for the Waymo One robotaxi fleet.

Waymo turned to Hyundai for the supply of vehicles to be converted into robotaxis for its growing Waymo One ride service. On Friday Waymo and Hyundai announced a multi-year partnership that will see Waymo's sixth-generation self-driving hardware and software be installed in Hyundai's Ioniq 5 EV.

Hyundai Motor's Ioniq 5 EV will incorporate Waymo's autonomous driving technology and join its robotaxi service, the Korean automaker announced Friday.
