North Korean hackers have stolen $1.5 billion in cryptocurrency in a single heist, making it the largest crypto hack on record, security experts told CNN.

Researchers spot the stolen funds moving through cryptocurrency wallets that were used in earlier heists attributed to North Korea's Lazarus hacking group.

The cryptocurrency industry and those responsible for securing it are still in shock following Friday’s heist, likely by North Korea, that drained $1.5 billion from Dubai-based exchange Bybit, making the theft by far the biggest ever in digital asset history.

Bybit’s $1.46 billion hack is the largest in crypto history, with Chainalysis uncovering North Korea’s role and tracking laundered funds.

North Korea drained a cryptocurrency exchange over the weekend, marking the biggest theft in digital currencies since their inception.

Following the revelation Friday from cryptocurrency exchange firm Bybit that hackers stole digital tokens worth about $1.5 billion – in what may be the biggest crypto heist of all time – CEO Ben Zhou wrote on X Sunday that it has replenished its reserves. Bybit was able to do this through a mix of emergency loans and large deposits.

Investigation revealed that BingX, & Phemex hacks were also connected to the same cluster as Bybit's, confirming the threat actor’s identity as the Lazarus group.
