The CDC said in May that more than twice as many measles have come from outside of the U.S. compared to May of last year, and most of those are in unvaccinated Americans returning home.
As of late last week, the CDC reported that there have been 1,168 confirmed cases of measles, the second-highest count in a single year since measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000.
“In 2025, measles is making a troubling comeback,” wrote Dr. Erica Pan, the director of the California Department of Public Health, in a statement earlier this year.
According to the CDC, one dose of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine gives families a 93% protection against the illness. A second shot bumps you up to 97% for life.
