This is more evidence of a bleep show with the training staff this year. So many mismanaged injuries,' a source told Matthew Coller.
The Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings will link up at Ford Field this Sunday with both teams in need of a win to potentially gain ground on division leader Green Bay. The Lions have enjoyed a strong season on defense behind star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson this season while the Vikings have fallen back to the pack amid the resurgence of the Chicago Bears and starting QB J.
It’s week nine of the Minnesota Vikings season and reality has not played out according to plan. The Vikings are a 3-4 football team that is struggling to find an identity on both sides of the ball, and a competent quarterback who can stay healthy.
In particular, Campbell pointed out on Tuesday two young Vikings players that have impressed him: J.J. McCarthy and Jalen Redmond.
Maybe the most jarring is how disappointing the Vikings have been in this area since coach Kevin O’Connell arrived in 2022. They have passed on 68.1 percent of these downs and distances, the most of any team in the NFL over that span. They’ve had a 20 percent higher conversion rate when running than when throwing.
Unfortunately for McCarthy, Hutchinson has returned to his true form after his injury -- resembling the player who’s an early favorite to win this season’s Defensive Player of the Year award. Hutchinson is currently tied for fifth among all edge rushers in sacks (six) and first in pressures (48).
Carson Wentz has been placed on injured reserve and will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, according to CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones. Wentz made five starts this season for the Vikings in relief of starting quarterback J.
The Vikings continue to be linked to their former quarterback despite them being seemingly all in on J.J. McCarthy.
Minnesota also played that Week 2 game without safety Harrison Smith and linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel. Smith has since returned to the lineup while Van Ginkel's status for Sunday in Detroit is unknown. Meanwhile, McCarthy, Jones, and Kelly all suffered injuries against the Falcons in the second week of the season.
