Selected by the Boston Celtics with the sixth overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft after his second year at Indiana State, Bird elected to stay in college and returned for the 1978–79 season. He then led his team to an undefeated regular season.

In the 1992 Olympic Games, Bird helped the U.S. win a gold medal. In 1998, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Named Indiana Pacers head coach in 1997, Bird piloted the Indianapolis-based team to the NBA playoffs twice in two seasons.
