She helps Ben build a pony cart. An elderly neighbor reinforces John-Boy's feelings that despite hard times he is lucky to be surrounded by a loving family.

Mrs MacKenzie, an old widowed lady living nearby gets John-Boy to fix her car as she wants to use it to go to the coast, but Dr Vance forbids her to drive it as she has a very weak heart. But it's the anniversary of her wedding and every year on that day she used to journey back to the sea and she wants to do it once more before she dies.
