4,000 days on, long-lived Curiosity rover keeps on ticking
When they say the rover is supposed to last 2 years, what that means in that context is that losing it before 2 years would constitute "mission failure." It would be treated with similar scrutiny as the whole thing detonating on the launch pad, or the rover failing to brake during landing and smashing against the surface of Mars.

We made about a dozen 12" long tubes, carefully hand-bent, soldered, machined, and charged with ammonia. I think they averaged $20k a piece, and about 2% of that was materials. The rest was design, hand-making them, and testing.

IIRC after curiosity landed they wiped the landing sequence operations and uploaded the rover functionality code because there wasn't enough space for both. Or perhaps it was the interplanetary travel instructions that got replaced with the landing sequence

Nov 2, 2012 · Curiosity had to land vertically on its wheels at 1-2mph. It also has a rocker bogie system with no "give" - there are no springs or shock absorbers in the system. The spokes and thin shell wheels provide the suspension without the complexity or risk of moving parts.

Jun 12, 2022 · That was the one bit that made me wonder if all the maps will be procedural generation or if some would be more hand crafted. While there aren't many vehicles we have sent to Mars, how cool would it be as an Easter Egg to know the real life location a rover was sent to, fly there in game and actually find it.
