This is an early Century Electric repulsion-start induction motor firing up. On startup, it uses a repulsion motor setup with brushes and a commutator to generate high starting torque. Once it comes up to speed, a centrifugal mechanism mechanically shorts the commutator, converting it into a standard induction motor.
