In October 1905, Teddy Roosevelt established Passage Key as a National Wildlife Refuge. This designated the island for the preservation of seabirds and wading birds. In 1970, Passage Key received additional protection when the U.S. Congress designated it as a National Wilderness. Citizens are not allowed on Passage Key for the protection of birds and other wildlife. However, You can enjoy sights of the island from the water or visit neighboring areas, Egmont Key and Fort Desoto. | Manatee County

Painted treasure: Of all the the colorful birds that travel north through the Florida Keys during spring migration, the painted bunting (Passerina ciris) is likely to be among people's favorites. The male of the species has a mix of bright red, blue, yellow and green colors that makes it hard to miss. The females are more camouflaged, with a bright lime green color. They typically forage on the ground, eating seeds like this one. He also flew into a gumbo limbo tree and appeared to eat ripe seed

It's really hot out! If you want to see the most wildlife, and capture the best photo opportunities at National Key Deer Refuge, it's best to get out early in the morning or wait until an hour or two before sunset. Just a reminder that the key deer find plenty of healthy natural food by themselves, so please don't feed them; it's not healthy for them, and it's against the law. Please help us spread the word. Passage Key Views ☀️💦 . Passage Key is located at the mouth of Tampa Bay in Manatee County, south of Egmont Key. President Theodore Roosevelt established Passage Key NWR in 1905 to preserve nesting colonies of native seabirds and wading birds. In the early 1900’s Passage Key was a 60-acre mangrove island with a freshwater lake. Today, Passage Key is a low-lying sandbar that fluctuates in size, and is found often completely below water during high tide. . More than 50 species of birds have used

Two minutes of tropical "chill"- Relax and watch this wild American flamingo feed in the shallow waters oceanside of the Florida Keys. You'll notice they move their feet to enhance their feeding opportunities. (We thought it might be so that they'd get their 10,000 steps in for the day, but that theory has been disproven ;) ) We don't get many flamingos visiting the Florida Keys so when they make their rare appearances they are appreciated by visitors and locals alike. Shallow water salt ponds are the life blood of many wading birds and pelicans in the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges. Just last week white pelicans were foraging with great egrets, snowy egrets, white ibis, great blue herons, tricolored herons and brown pelicans. American white pelicans are seasonal residents in the Florida Keys, returning to the west and mid-western states to breed during the summer months. They are one of the largest birds in North America as you'll see in the slideshow

Celebrating the National Key Deer Refuge's 60th Anniversary this week. We often get asked how the Key deer get from island to island. Its pretty simple, they either walk or swim. This helps them move about the lower Florida Keys pretty easily, although they prefer to stay on the islands that have natural freshwater wetlands. Although most of the population resides on Big Pine and No Name Keys, they range all the way westward to Upper and Lower Sugarloaf Keys. Video Credit: Mary Lou Dickson | Flo

We are celebrating the National Key Deer Refuge's 60th Anniversary this week with videos and photos that highlight just what an amazing place it is. One thing we really love about living here is the ability to view the unique Key deer in their natural environments. We encourage folks to visit the Blue Hole, Nature Trails or even walk some of the better maintained fire roads to get off the beaten trails a little to really appreciate the refuge. Key deer wander all of the habitats in the refuge, i

A visit to Great White Heron NWR is one you won't soon forget. There are almost 200,000 acres of mangrove islands and shallow waters, brimming with life. We ask that people share these backcountry waters and respect the rules that were put in place to protect sensitive wildlife. If you see shorebirds resting or feeding on sandbars, please give them space. We are entering the fall migration season and already many species are stopping to rest and feed on what might be an exhausting thousand mile

Great news! The white-crowned pigeon family on the refuge's critter cam has added a new member. Check out this video clip from yesterday highlighting the male pigeon (he's a little darker, greener neck colors) feeding the very young pinkish colored chick. Chicks are fed "pigeon milk", a substance made from the berries they eat, specifically to feed their young. If you'd like to watch live, check out the link on the National Key Deer Refuge or Great White Heron NWR websites- www.fws.gov/refuge/Na
