The Malayan flying fox is one of the largest bat species in the world, famous for its impressive wingspan, which can reach up to 1.5 metres. Despite its name, it does not fly like a fox at all. It is a fruit bat that feeds on figs, mangoes, and a wide variety of other fruits. Found across Southeast Asia, these bats play a vital role in pollination and seed dispersal, helping forests regenerate and keeping ecosystems healthy and balanced. They are commonly known as fruit bats or flying foxes, among other colloquial names. They live in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, East Africa, and some oceanic islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. There are at least 60 extant species in the genus.
