By the middle of the 19th century the maain food crop in Ireland was Potatoes. Here a husband and wife team are planting potatoes in ridges/rigs. This was the most popular way of growing potatoes at that time. The seed would have beeen pushed down into a nick made by the spade, or loy as it was called and earthed up as the potatoes grew.
