On October 28, American Bittern #24-4268 was admitted from Norfolk, after colliding with a window at a construction site. The bird had a broken femur and anemia, and our veterinary team not only performed surgery to pin the fractured bone, but they even orchestrated a blood transfusion using blood from a Great Horned Owl donor! The bittern is recovering, though feeding and monitoring this high-stress patient has been challenging. The staff are using a small wireless camera to check on the bird's

Has anyone else heard any booming sounds coming from their local marsh? Our bird project learder Doug Morin tells us more: "This is a male American Bittern, performing it’s vocalization – sometimes called “booming.” Bitterns are a highly camouflaged and secretive species that inhabit dense shallow marshes. The strong, low-pitched “booming” call is important because it carries a long distance, allowing competing males and interested females to know where the displaying bird is, despite their habi

The American Bittern is one of the marsh’s most elusive hunters, moving with slow precision through dense reeds. Designed to vanish in a heartbeat, it rarely offers a clear view. I had to line up a perfect gap in the vegetation to capture these moments as it slipped through the wetlands in search of its next meal. #americanbittern #bittern #birds #nature #wildlife #sonyalpha #wildlifevideos | Amber Favorite Photography

VOLUME UP ‼️ This American Bittern patient was feeling pretty bitter after admission to our rescue center! Patient #422 in 2025. These marsh-dwelling birds are a type of heron. They feed primarily on small fish and other aquatic invertebrates. They are a rare species for us and a difficult bird to spot in the wild. They are heard more often than seen. This bittern was likely on their way up to breeding grounds in the northern US when they were grounded in someone’s backyard in Charlotte, NC. We

American Bittern… aka "thunder-pumper", "stake-driver", "mire-drum". Though not often seen, their sounds are commonly heard in the Refuge marshes this time of year. These secretive marshbirds frequent shorelines and vegetation edges that are dominated by tall emergent wetland plants. Their calls - loud, low, resonant, pumping sounds - are used to communicate within the thick vegetation, apparently to defend territory and find mates. This individual was both heard and seen (through a spotting sco

American Bittern Botaurus lentiginosus In this video we see the sharp-eyed bittern stealthily stalking along the water’s edge and sneaking around a clump of tall grass in search of prey. We are rewarded by finally seeing it capture a rather large crayfish, Cambarus ssp., which it downs in a couple of gulps. Male bitterns are known for their loud booming calls that reverberate around the marshes of their northern breeding and nesting grounds in the spring, where they are more likely to be heard t

Bittern chicks - a FIRST in reserve history! We're extremely excited to announce the hatching of seven bittern chicks for the first time in Martin Mere's recorded history. In an attempt to encourage a breeding pair to the reedbed, our reserve team completed works such as clearing scrub, cutting large areas of reed to create an area of different aged reeds and raising the water levels on the reedbed to allow fish to thrive so that the bitterns would have enough supply to feed their young. The American Bittern's yellow eyes can focus downward, giving the bird's face a comically startled, cross-eyed appearance. This visual orientation presumably enhances the bird's ability to spot and capture prey. This patient was released last week after one month of care at South Florida Wildlife Center for injuries due to trauma. | South Florida Wildlife Center
